The 2022 season has been launched successfully with cyclo-cross racing. At Swiss nationals Lars Forster claimed silver, Andri Frischknecht finished 4th.

Steinmaur, Switzerland. The two riders on SCOTT-SRAM who have a heart for cyclo-cross racing had a short but successful pre-season stint of racing skinny tires off-road in ankle-deep mud. Due to COVID, the Swiss cyclo-cross season was shortened drastically. This left Lars Forster and Andri Frischknecht only two opportunities to test their skills against the die-hard CX specialists. In Meilen, Switzerland on January 2nd, SCOTT-SRAM claimed 2 podium spots, with Lars Forster in 2nd, and Andri Frischknecht in 3rd position. Hopes where high for a repeat as the Swiss National Championships stepped off only a week later!

Cyclo-Cross racing depends a lot on the weather conditions in the winter. This can be a mild and warm day, granting a high-speed race day, or freezing cold, making for a more technical race. The 2022 Swiss Nationals delivered neither of these conditions. Instead, the riders squared up against the most brutal conditions imaginable, with deep mud covering the entire course and snow dropping from above. Successfully completing even one lap of this course called for a lot of dismounting and running with the bike. A race such as this requires just as much mental strength as it does peak physical condition.
While Lars Forster had a good start hanging onto main favorite Kevin Kuhn’s wheel, Andri Frischknecht didn’t get out of the start block. Riding strong, he managed to close the gap to bridge up to Lars half-way through the race.
The two SCOTT-SRAM teammates, sitting in 3rd and 4th, showed their teeth ’til the very end of the race, which resulted in bridging the gap with Timon Rüegg who won the race prior to nationals. The decision came down to the final lap. At this point, Kevin Kuhn, top 10 racer in the World Cup, was out of reach defending his title. This left two of the three contenders would make the second place step on the podium. Lars Forster proved once more his late-race strength, finishing the day with silver. Timon Rüegg secured bronze which left Andri only seconds behind in 4th.
In these two races both SCOTT-SRAM riders showed they are able to challenge CX specialists any time. Fair to say this was a successful cyclo cross rendezvous-vous before they now focus on mountain biking again. Physically and mentally both are in good shape already working tehir way towards the 2022 mountain bike season.

“This were indeed very tough conditions. But that’s cyclo cross! This sport happens outside! Apart of the running sections I actually enjoyed playing in the mud and with the outcome I’m more than pleased.”
