With Filippo Colombo winning his first XCO national title in the elite class, Nino Schurter finishing third despite a flat tire and Andri Frischknecht coming fourth, the Swiss Championships were a #nextlevel race day for SCOTT-SRAM.

Echallens, July 14th. For someone who can call himself a 9-time Swiss champion, the Swiss Championships are normally all about winning gold. For Nino Schurter, however, this year’s Swiss Championships were mainly about completing the preparation phase with a final endurance test in view of the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.

The race began with a few tactical games, and you could feel that all the riders were tapping into their last reserves after all the back-to-back race weekends. Only Nino Schurter, who came straight from the altitude training camp, had a little less racing in his legs. When all the favorites were still in the leading group on the third lap, Filippo Colombo was the first to ride into a trail ahead of Nino. He immediately opened a gap and pulled away into the lead on lap 3. While Nino and Andri Frischknecht did not have to do any leading work behind, Filippo was able to extend his lead to half a minute within a very short time. On the fourth lap, Nino suffered a front wheel flat, but with a quick wheel change by Yanick the mechanic, this mishap didn’t cost him too much and he resumed the race in 7th position, right behind Andri Frischknecht.

Meanwhile, Filippo Colombo rode an isolated race at the front, his lead over Joel Roth was always between 20 and 30 seconds. After seven laps, Filippo finally rode to his first elite XCO Swiss Championship title with a lead of 24 seconds.

“Super nice to put this jersey on, I’m super stoked about and just can’t wait to ride it for the next races. Now some holidays, I really need it.”

Behind, Joel Roth, Nino Schurter and Andri Frischknecht showed a strong race to catch up, because if things don’t go as they should, it’s about more than just winning. It’s about showing good morale and team spirit. Nino showed once again what a great champion he is. Andri Frischknecht and Nino Schurter harmonized perfectly and worked their way forward together lap by lap. With the fastest lap time, Nino pulled away from his pursuers on the last lap and secured the bronze medal.
“That was a pretty tactical race, it was really nice to help Filippo to win the title. Unfortunately, I had afterwards a front flat, lost a bit of time but still managed to get third. Felt really strong and I’m looking forward now for the big race in two weeks time.”

Behind Nino, it came down to a sprint decision between Vital Albin and Andri Frischknecht, with the better end for Andri. With Filippo winning the title, Nino in third and Andri in fourth place, all SCOTT-SRAM riders are ranked in the top 4, an incredible team effort from everyone, but the champion is Filippo, who was just as happy for his teammates.
